"Listed on the site" does not mean "available on your dates": we confirm availability on WhatsApp.
The Ministry of Environment sets the humpback whale-watching season in Samaná Bay from 15 January to 30 March, with watching allowed from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Outside these dates, whale-watching trips are shown on the site as "out of season". According to the official tourism site, 2,500 or more whales return to the country's north-east coast every season.
Boats must carry a radio; no more than three boats may watch at the same time, in order of arrival, while the others wait 250 m away. A boat may not stay longer than 30 minutes with a group of whales, or 20 minutes with a mother and calf. Swimming with whales is prohibited in Samaná Bay.
Trips leave from the port of Santa Bárbara de Samaná. Check on each listing whether the transfer from Las Terrenas is included, and which language the on-board commentary is in.
