The official tourism site gives the park an area of about 1,600 km² and explains that its name means "land of hills" in the Taíno language. The Ministry of Environment describes it as the most important karst region in the Antilles, with limestone hills about 30 m high rising from the water, vast mangroves and islets sheltering bird colonies.
Caves with pictographs and petroglyphs include Cueva de la Arena, Cueva de San Gabriel and Cueva de la Línea.
The official site says to board at the port of Santa Bárbara de Samaná. From Las Terrenas, some tours include the road transfer — check each listing, along with the park entrance fee and lunch.
